Bible Verses for Caregivers: 25 Scriptures for the Hardest Days
Scripture for caregivers for the days you’re exhausted, afraid, grieving, or caring for an aging parent — short verses to hold onto, and free large-print cards to keep close.
When you need a verse right now: three to breathe on today — “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28); “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9); and “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart” (Psalm 34:18). You don’t have to hold it all together. He is holding you while you hold them.
Caregiving for a loved one — especially through dementia or a long illness — is not a sprint you can push through. It’s a long obedience on very little sleep. These twenty-five verses (King James Version) are grouped by the kind of day you might be having. Take the one you need.
For when you’re running on empty
- “They that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength… they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” — Isaiah 40:31
- “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7
- “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28
For when you feel like you’re failing
- “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9
- “Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” — Galatians 6:9
- “Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.” — Proverbs 31:25
For the grief of losing someone who is still here
- “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
- “Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.” — Matthew 5:4
- “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.” — Psalm 147:3
For the days you have nothing left
- “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” — Psalm 46:1
- “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” — Philippians 4:13
- “He will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.” — Deuteronomy 31:8
For when fear and worry take over
- “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee.” — Isaiah 41:10
- “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” — Philippians 4:6
- “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you… Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” — John 14:27
For patience when you’re worn thin
- “Charity suffereth long, and is kind… beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.” — 1 Corinthians 13:4,7
- “Be patient toward all men… See that none render evil for evil unto any man.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:14–15
- “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance.” — Galatians 5:22–23
For caring for an aging parent
- “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land.” — Exodus 20:12
- “Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.” — Psalm 71:9
- “If any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith.” — 1 Timothy 5:8
- “Let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.” — 1 Timothy 5:4
Caregivers in the Bible
If caregiving feels invisible, take heart — Scripture is full of people who cared for others, and God saw every one of them:
- Ruth cared for Naomi, refusing to leave her widowed mother-in-law: “Whither thou goest, I will go… thy people shall be my people.” — Ruth 1:16
- The Good Samaritan tended a wounded stranger, bound his wounds, and paid for his care. — Luke 10:33–35
- Jesus, from the cross, made sure His mother would be cared for: “Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.” — John 19:26–27
- Elijah was cared for by an angel when he was too exhausted to go on — given food, water, and rest before the journey ahead. — 1 Kings 19:5–7
The same God who provided for them provides for you. When you tend to someone who can no longer tend to themselves, you are doing holy work — and you are not doing it alone.

How to actually use these (not just read them once)
A verse helps most when it’s in front of you at the moment you need it, not buried in a bookmark. What caregivers tell us works: pick one for the week and say it out loud in the car; tape one to the bathroom mirror or the coffee maker; keep one in your wallet for the waiting room. Let it become the sentence that runs under your breath on the hard afternoons.
Strength for the whole road
